Question Boost All and Red Away bad reaction

I was reorganizing my workshop today when I remembered that I once went to a house that had yellow urine stains that would not come out. I went back a week later to do some further work and noticed they we're still there. So I mixed some boost all and sprayed again while I did my work. Nothing happened, so I sprayed some red away on it. Well that was not good. The carpet got hot and the spots came out but so did the color. I did some color correction that day.

I thought they we're both made of the same stuff, just one stronger than the other. Guess I was wrong. Anyone know why this happened?

    Incompatibility with strong oxidizing agents.

I'm not smart enough to answer this question, but I did find that there is a chemical incompatibility between boost all which is mainly sodium percarbonate and "strong oxidizing agents." Here is the pdf on Boost All. http://www.interlinksupply.com/msds/...OOST_ALL_2.pdf
I could not locate one on Red Away, but I am assuming it falls into the category of "strong oxidizing agent". Here is the definition of sodium percarbonate, "Sodium percarbonate is a white crystalline water-soluble adduct of sodium carbonate and hydrogen peroxide.[1] Sodium percarbonate is the active ingredient in many powdered oxygen eco-friendly bleach products, including OxiClean.
It is an oxidizing agent and ingredient in a number of home and laundry cleaning products.[1] Despite the name, it is, in fact, a carbonate perhydrate.[1] Dissolved in water, it releases hydrogen peroxide and soda ash (sodium carbonate):[1]"

Scott Warrington probably knows the facts better, but I think I'm on the right track at least. Btw, I always have been fearful of mixing things like that unless I really know they are compatible. Chemicals used in this business can be tricky and I have both seen and heard as well as experienced what can happen with them to be wary of them.

same thing happens with Pros Choice 2 part red relief and 2 part stain magic gets very hot but doesn't remove the carpet color. I used to work in a hazardous waste disposal facility and every chemical has a category but thats only if its labeled correctly. Had all kinds of bad reactions. but as for why it happened with those 2 chemicals, I haven't a clue... Scott this ones for you...

I may be wrong but it sounds like one was a oxyegenator (adds oxygen) and the other was a reducer(removes oxygen) they should not be mixed. if you use one after the other the first one must be flushed out. Jeff cross probably has the answer to this.

Boost All is indeed an oxidizer while the other product is a reducer. When mixed they have an exothermic reaction. That is one that releases heat and energy.

So folks have melted spryaers or bottles mixing these type of products. At least one person I know of started a small fire.

Be careful of mixing products that were not intended to be mixed with each other. Rinse between different products.

For those of scientific bent, an oxidizer actually does not always add oxygen. What it does is remove two electrons. A reducer does not remove oxygen but adds two electrons.

The reaction actually will always be both at once. If you remove electrons they have to go somewhere. Something is gaining while something else is losing.

When you mix the two opposites they acclerate each other. Electrons get moved around forming new molecules and releasing net energy.

    Let me get this strait.

If I am understanding you correctly Scott then it would appear at least that the msds for Boost all is either incomplete or incorrect since it says it ONLY has chemical incompatibility with strong oxidizing agents which are not reducers. Am I correct on this? Please explain. If there is a serious incompatibility with reducing agents it should be listed on the msds for sure don't you think. Someone needs to update it if that is the case. If I am understanding correctly it sounds like a reducing agent is the polar opposite of an oxidizer. The simplest to understand definitions I could find that don't require a chemistry degree are as follows.
    1. oxidizing agent (plural oxidizing agents)
(chemistry) Any substance that oxidizes, or receives electrons from, another; in so doing, it becomes reduced.
    2. reducing agent (plural reducing agents)
(chemistry) Any substance that reduces, or donates electrons to, another; in so doing, it becomes oxidized.

So then, is the msds for Boost All in need of updating or am I wrong in thinking that a reducer is not in the category of "strong oxidizing agents" that is specified in the msds?

This is a good question. I will need to investigate further. I am on my way out the door to Connections. So I won't have the opportunity to post further until I return and get the whole story.

This is what I understand at this time. Subject to correction as I learn more about the MSDS.

The confusion seems mostly due to government definitions. Since when anything is oxidized, something else is reduced, they consider it all as one reaction - oxidizing. So the only thing they want listed on the MSDS is incompatibilities with oxodizing agents.

Thiis section of the information is iuntended mostly for fire fighters and they have concerns about oxidizers.

Re: Boost All and Red Away bad reaction

hmm I am stumped because I know nothing of the two products nor their chemical structure.

But I love the new look of the site.!!

I remeber one time I tried to get pretreat some pants in the laundry with Tide or Gain with peroxide. the reaction was so hot is burned the ceramic paint on the dryer and turned the clothing into dust where I applied it. and the fumes were like breathing pure ammonia and chrorine. Wow that was scarey as heck.

A great plastic fixative. say like a broken plastic kitchen utinsil take the tip of a Qtip and good old fashioned crazy glue. place the cotton onto the plastic add a drop or two and it will react and bind the cotton with the plastic permantanly. and man it gets hot!!
