Rug to Run From - RAYON or VISCOSE

Rayon, and its fancier name "viscose", is being used to make A LOT of rugs sold both on-line and in stores.

This is sold as FAKE silk - but it is nothing like silk. It is garbage.

It is the weakest fiber out there (next to perhaps plain paper) for rugs.

It breaks, it distorts, it bleeds, it fades, it yellows, it just sucks.

If our clients are thinking about buying one - tell them to RUN.

If you are thinking of cleaning one - be CAREFUL!

You can create problems vacuuming it, scrubbing it, or grooming it.

Getting it wet can make it yellow. Or worse BLEED.

Just a trap to warn you about... hopefully you will recognize it when you see it!

    Happy New Year!

Re: Rug to Run From - RAYON or VISCOSE

You should ALWAYS do a color fast test on ANY rug Regardless of where it came from what it's made of or what the label says on the back if it has one.

NEVER EVER SKIP THIS PROCESS IN CLEANING RUGS

Unless you are prepared to buy it from the customer.

    Hi Green,
Good points. You have to test. But I am sure you realize that Lisa knows that she is very good at this. This wasn't her mistake it is a Flood rug.

Re: Rug to Run From - RAYON or VISCOSE

At some point we ALL become "experts" at bleeding rugs... =) ... then we learn to become an expert at NOT bleeding them.

That's the school of hard knocks! And the best way to learn is through DOING and not just reading about it in books.

But I'm sure you all agree with me on that one. LOL

Re: Rug to Run From - RAYON or VISCOSE

Great advise from Lisa to advise the clients to not purchase these rugs. I absolutly love it when we are doing pre-inspection on rugs and the client reconizes that we are the experts and will often say,, "you know a lot about rugs, who can I trust to buy more rugs?"
We use this moment as an opportunity to teach them how to be smart shoppers to look out for these FAUX silk rugs, Tufted rugs, crappy wool and to look for powerwoven or better yet hand knotted rugs! We then give the client several business cards of trustworthy places to go shopping and as we have fantastic relationships with most rug galleries, carpet dealers (that all have at least some loose rugs) and even big box stores and we are able to offer them an incentive to shop these places as they are happy to give our clients a break on price or even free or discounted pad as they are our client! Now this becomes even better, because these stores in turn don't just recommend us for cleaning, but they give their new rug customers a "certificate" for a free protective finish application that we will apply,, all the client has to do is del the rug to us and pu the next day. What is amazing is how many of these new clients will accually come right back with some old and dirty rugs from how for us to perform our TLC on, and that is profitable for us!

Regarding these cheep viscose rugs they are best cleaned with a lower moisture process, and I dont mean bonnet or OP. I have seen MANY of these cleaned by carpet cleaners inside of the clients home with low moisture pad systems and this will simply lift the loose colors and smear all over the rug. It is best to clean these with a HWE, but at a lower temp and dry flat after grooming with a soft brush. We do a ton of these, charge more then replacement cost as the client has decorated around the rug and can't find a suitable replacement!
of coarse, still do a pretest and dry fast with a blower.
