    repair?

    Hi Lisa,
Hoping you can see the pics ok.
I told customer I would look into the possibility of getting
this carpet repaired. It has pulled apart along almost one
side. Any ideas if it is repairable and if so how costly would it be.

    Thanks,

    Hi Matthew,

GREAT photos. This is a dhurry, a hand woven rug from India.

One of the problems with these flatweave rugs is that they finish off the side sometimes with these big heavy sidecords. You can see on your rug here, those sides are taller than the rug itself.

So what happens is shoes catch these edges, create more force/pull, and eventually they tear a little, and then pull off a lot.

What the rug needs is to be secured on the sides (so it will not unravel anymore) and to attach a new sidecord and wrap - this time not as BIG as the old one.

This is a pretty standard repair. Usually billed by the linear foot. At my shop we would charge $15 a linear foot for the entire length of the rug. You might find a local rug plant to do this for about the same, or less.

Because these are not valuable rugs, you also may find someone with a serging machine who can add a cord and wrap to the sides. I usually NEVER recommend this, because hand made rugs should have repairs done by hand - but this looks to be a good size rug, and if the owner did not pay a lot of money for it, this might be a cheaper and better option - more toward $5 a foot.

Hope that helps, and thanks for the question.

    Lisa
