    Drying rack "hump"

So I cleaned an 8x11 rug in the wash pit. A tufted rug with a sewn on back. Good quality. Hung it on the drying rack to dry and when I laid it out to roll for delivery it had a hump where it was hanging over the rack. I was not surprised, but I'm wondering just how long will this take to go away, or will it? I've seen it before but never worried about til now. This one has me concerned for some reason.

    Re: Drying rack "hump"

Sounds like you prob streached where it humped. Rugs get extreamly heavy and especially a tufted (glue together rug) has a weak backing and will streach out. Some folks will put a very big tube (over 12") over the lifting pole and this will spead out the load to minimize this problem. Do make sure you poles have no twist in them as well as this will contribute to the problem.

Regarding fixing this, you can try rewashing and rolling out the back while it is still wet and rehang as per my suggestions. Of coarse you can dry flat as well and some folks will set up a drying platform with holes to dry these rugs.

    Good luck

you can use a concrete form tube and wrap it in plastic as they are made of paper/cardboard.

Some folks will even go out and buy a giant PVC drain pipe,, but I think that is too expensive.

    Re: Drying rack "hump"

If you use a bigger tube you'll get a bigger Hump. If you have pit washed the rug the important point is to remove as much water as you can with an extractor. It will take a bit of time but you will greatly reduce the weight of the rug by removing all the water. Then you could even flat dry it.

These rugs need to be dried out flat - you should not hang a tufted rug, especially with so many manufactured so poorly these days.

For this one try rolling it lengthwise instead of the normal width roll. Do a tight roll, and tie it in several spots, leave it over night, and see if that helps to break up the horizontal lump so it lays out flat.

Much easier than having to wash it again. Let me know how it works.
