    Reminder that VISCOSE RUGS SUCK....

More and more of these rugs are being sold to consumers... take a look, because you are going to have these cross your path:

It is fake silk looking, but is labels as viscose/rayon/faux silk/ or Art Silk.

This week I've received a dozen rug help emails on rayon specifically, and on this forum we had a post of a rayon TUFTED rug (a double-whammy of a rug to run from... bad fiber and bad construction...plus, saturated in PEE)

There are a host of problems associated with cleaning viscose. Dye migration, dye fade, fiber distortion, yellowing, uglying over a short period of time.

I made a post on my blog for consumers to specifically address this - because when they are searching to buy a viscose rug (which retailers market as "like silk" for a fraction of the price...) - they need to know they are buying garbage, no matter how it looks in the store.

Just be wary... because if you hit these puppies with hot water, too much scrubbing, too much water for too long, or too aggressive on the wand strokes - you are going to be buying the rug for your home.

Hope that helps a few of you stay out of trouble.

sometimes there are no tags on area rugs " age and who knows where they go" So how can you tell them apart? Just by the silk look?

I hate these S.O.B's they are also prone to unraveling. The best thing I use for these are isoprpyl alcohol/softened water blend. use a porty vented outside!!! aka an exhaust hose to the outdoors. BOOOM!!! lol

but mostly refuse these. or refere them to a franchised company. let them get the bad mouthing. lol

Drop a tuft in a cup of NEW Chlorox. If it is silk (or wool) it will slowly start to bubble up (dissolving). If it is mercerized cotton or rayon, it won't.

You can do the burn test also - first group smells like burnt hair, second like paper ... but they always smell like MATCHES to me, so I like chemical tests.

Could this be another example of fake silk rug? Client has 8 rugs of various sizes. Gave me this one tonight to test telling her I was very leery of the structure of this rug. That gut feeling! I will do chemical test (Chlorox).

Chemical test results proved it to be of a non-silk material. No reaction when placed in fresh chlorox.
    THANKS

Jim, that rug is rayon viscose. This exactly what Lisa has been discussing. Fake silk.

If you choose to clean it, follow her adice on how it should be done.

BTW - Students (me) had an opportunity to clean one of these rugs during the hands-on portionof Lisa's rug class in Henderson NV earlier this month.

    Scott,
Thanks and by the way I did take advantage of the sale for Hydroforce Injection sprayer .Tested on sidewalk and a little concerned of the amount of solution being used. Another learning curve !
