    Curling rug

Picked up a runner today - handmade (probably Persian). It got wet from a leaking garden hose on one end. It statred to dry and is curling up on the end that was wet. i can't get it to the shop until Monday. Any ideas? I will try and post a pic Monday.

    Re: Curling rug

Bob this may seem a little antiquated. We take 2x4's and run them the distance of the rug. Then we put weights on them. Let them dry. Simple and inexpensive alternative to big unit used at rug speciality shops.

    Curling rug

I have used a wet towel and steam iron on REGULAR rugs, bound carpet, to correct this issue. Not sure if I would do that on a Persian. Then weights after the heat training.

    Re: Curling rug

The rug is curling because of the cotton construction of this type of Persian (asymmetrical) knot weave. The cotton swells and the edges curl inward. When you wash this rug it will do the same.

If you do not have 2x4's (which on some rug will create a discoloration, so be careful on that) - you can also use clean plastic jugs full of water to hold down the worst areas.

When the rug is dry, it will be flat again.

No worries on this. HOWEVER, when you pick up a rug for cleaning that curls when DRY... then this is a weaving flaw, usually one that can be corrected somewhat by a rug repair specialist. But it's always good to point this out before you clean it, so they know it's there.

    Re: Curling rug

Thanks - I am actually out of town and will deal with it when I get back. I plan to wash it and use 2x4's or maybe some tack strips to hold it. Will report.

    Re: Curling rug

Finally got to this due to a bunch of flooeded rugs. Cleaned it and put a bunch of gallon chem jugs along it - seemed to do the trick!
