Looks like a woven synthetic rug to me. These are usually bullet proof.
If you don't have a wash pit
1. make sure you do a bleed test first
2. if dry, dust rug first with vac or duster if you have one.
3. hose down with water both sides.
4. use a good shampoo such as Masterblend or Chemex mixed with a good odor product
5. Scrub up with a rotary scrubber both sides
6. roll it up soaking wet for a couple of hours
7. hose the rug off alternating sides till no suds
8. extract both sides with your extractor.
9. hang to dry with fringes low on one corner.
10 force dry with fans
11. when dry then give a sniff test.
12. repeat as needed.
Of coarse the first thing you should really do is get out to a rug class.
Here is a link to upcoming rug cleaning classes. Look for the yellow highlights.

Thanks Dusty.... .. number 6 kind of threw me for a loop... mmmm

If its a cheapo Olefin I usually hit them with OSR and a good soak.

Take a class or repeat 12 over and over and over and ...............................
Take Bob's advise it makes sense.

Olefin - OSR is a good choice. Dusty's steps are good for synthetics... I'd not do that for any real rugs though, just FYI.

Lisa so Lisa what do you use for real =wven natural fiber... do you agree that this what i said it was...

It it definitely machine made - looks olefin to me. Do a fiber test (or... look for a label and see if it says polypropelene on it). Do a dye test (though if it's olefin it ain't bleeding).
The basics - get them covered.
